Week 1, June 4th – June 10th
Sunday, June 10th, was the end of my first week of my internship. My first camp was the Tiffin University football camp, which was held in the brand new facility, the Heminger Recreation Center. I helped with the check-in of 37 student-athletes that attended the camp and wrote down their information in order to make the charting for the coaches easier. Once the registration process was over, all the athletes went through weight and height checks, and then started their different tests in the turf room. I helped Coach Yeast record times for the athlete’s 40 yard dash and then I helped Coach Nance with the recording of the shuttle run times. Once the tests were done, they started doing different offense and defense drills and I helped with the organization of the t-shirts. Finally when the camp finished I passed out the t-shirts to each camper and collected the jerseys that were passed out to them at registration. Overall I worked 4 and a half hours helping at this camp. On Friday morning the second camp had started and I helped the TU Women’s basketball team run their shoot out. My job title was “the runner.” Throughout the past three days I ordered, picked up, and delivered pizzas to the five different playing sites, including the Gilmore gym, St. Joes School, Calvert High School, Columbian Middle School, and the Heminger Recreation Center. I helped run the concession stand at the rec center and made sure that the food and drinks being sold never ran out and stayed stocked the entire three days, which included making trips to the women’s locker room, Kroger and Wal-Mart. I was in charge of dropping off the food orders to the 5 different restaurants we had gotten lunches and dinners from and then picking up the meals and delivering them to the sites. I also made special trips to the Gilmore in order to get basketballs for teams who forgot to bring their own for warm ups and also to grab papers that the Coaches needed from their offices. I dropped off checks to the referees so they could be paid by the time their games were over
and made sure that people were in the places they needed to be. At the end of the 3 days that I had worked the shootout, I had completed a total of 30 hours and 45 minutes and had driven a total of 86 miles around Tiffin. Although there weren’t
that many days of camp in this first week, by the end of the night on Sunday I was exhausted.
Week 2, June 11th- June 17th
My second week was much more relaxed and was shorter than the first. My week started on June 12th when I had to be at Paradiso Complex by 8:10am for the kid’s football camp registration. I helped Coach Yeast with check-in until the camp started at 10:00am which I waited to make sure there weren’t any late arrivals. Once it was 11:45 I had to go to the Gilmore center to pick up the pizzas from the cafeteria for lunch time. I picked up a total of 12 sausage, peperoni, and cheese pizzas and delivered them to the field for the 27 kid’s lunches. The following day I worked another camp for the women’s basketball team, their kid’s camp. Bright and early at 7:45am I showed up, met with the team and Coach Spiegel and learned what we had to do for the night 3 days. The camp ran the first two days from 9:00-2:00pm and on Friday from
9:00-12:00. Over the 3 days I ran stations, I coached a little kid’s team, and I helped chart scores of different competitions. This camp was much more enjoyable than the shootout because I actually got to interact with the
kids and teach them the fundamentals of basketball. For the first part of everyday my station was shooting, it was very basic and I taught the kids the right form when shooting. The second part of the morning consisted of another round of stations and I had passing with another women’s basketball player. Once that was over we did competitions, ate lunch at noon everyday besides Friday, and then from lunchtime until the end of camp the kids played 5-on-5 games. On the 13th, at lunch time, I had to pick up another 12 pizzas from the cafeteria and run them down to the Paradiso Complex for the football kid’s camp. By the end of week 2 I had a total of 54 hours and 55 minutes.
Week 3, June 25th- July 1st
My third week of camps was another three day high school basketball shootout from the 28ththrough the 30th of June,
which was held at St Mary’s, the Gilmore center, and the Heminger Center. I worked a total of 27 and a half hours for Coach Bucilla. On the first day I arrived at 7:30am and helped set up the gymnasium, the concession stand, and the registration table, which is where I worked all day until 4:30pm. There were a total of 6 varsity teams that checked in for the first day. At the concession stand the sold water, Gatorade, t-shirts, about 7 different types of candy bars. The second day I arrived at 7:30am, I started out working at the registration table and concession stand and then I moved to working the
scoreboards in the Gilmore gym finishing up at 5:30pm. There were a total of 15 junior varsity and varsity teams that were
registered for the second day. Finally on the third day I arrived there at 7:30am, and I worked the scoreboard all day long until 3:30pm. The games ran 2- 20 minute halves with a running clock, except the clock stopped the last minute of each half, and a 2 minute half time, if you were fouled on a shot you got a point and the ball back. At the end of the last day I had to help tear down the gym and make sure that everything was cleaned up and put away. By the end of week 3 I had a total of 81 hours and 25 minutes.
Week 4, July 9th- 15th
The first three days of week 6 were much shorter than the last three days of volleyball camp. In the first three days I worked a total of 15 hours and 15 minutes. The 9th through the 11th was the Tiffin University women’s volleyball team’s kids camp, there were a total of 29 kids from the ages of 7- 13. I worked with the younger kids for most of the camp teaching the orrect technique and forms of the basic volleyball skills, such as passing, setting, spiking, and serving. I showed up to camp each morning at 8:30am, the first morning I had to set up the net and make sure the balls were out in order for the girls to begin warming up while the others showed up and got registered. After lunch I went back to the gym and helped Coach Cordova get the folders and paperwork for our team camp later on in the week finished up. The second and third mornings I made sure the balls were out and that there was someone in the gym supervising while the athletes were showing up.
Throughout camp I worked with our assistant coach, Coach Cheri, and ran different drills to help teach and repeat the skills to make sure the girls were learning every detail and everything they should know about the different parts of the game. The last day we had the girls play games and scrimmage each other in order to see what they had learned and the level of skill these campers had. Each day we finished the camp at 12:00 and then we talked about the next day and made sure trash was picked up, balls were put away, and everything was ready to be brought out in the morning. The second part of the week was a three day high school volleyball team camp, which consisted of almost 300 games played within those
three days. On Thursday the 12th, I met with my coach at 10:00am at the new Heminger center to help setting up the 4 courts in that gym. I then helped set up the net at St. Mary’s gym and made sure that all the other facilities had the chairs they needed and that every court had a scoreboard and whatever else needed to be at each gym. By the time we had every gym set up it was time for the registration for the teams to begin at 2:00pm. I then helped with the registration and following registration we had our team meeting explaining the rules of the camp and then took all of our concession stand food and drinks to each site. Each match was just 2 games, both starting with the score at 4-4, to speed up the process of the game, at the end of each and every pool the teams were reseeded into another pool so in the end they could be put into a tournament bracket. The first pool play started at 5:00pm and we were in charge of refereeing each match, which that evening there were a total of 24 matches on the 4 different courts of the Heminger. In the morning on Friday we had to be at the Gilmore at 6:45am because we had a meeting to go over a couple of things about that day, we had to restock our concession stands and then we had to be at our specific gyms by 7:15am in order to start our day of refereeing. Friday there were a total of 48 matches in my gym, the Heminger center. Finally on Saturday we had to be at the Gilmore again at 6:45am in order to meet again and take more products to our concession stands. We then had to be at our gym by 7:15am to start the final pool before the reseeding for the tournament. We finished our last pool around 12:00 and then got lunch and had to start the tournament by 2:00pm. Our final match finished up at about 6:30pm and by the time we tore down the 4 courts and put everything back into storage we were done and out of there by about 7:00pm. By the end of this week I
had finished a total of 52 hours and 5 minutes, leaving me at a total of 133 hours.
Week 5, October 22nd - October 28th
On Wednesday and Thursday of this week I volunteered to help work volleyball clinics at BlackSwamp Volleyball Club. When I got there we put the girls through a warm-up consisting of partner passing, over hand throws, and serving warm ups. Once they finished the warm-up we went into three different stations and each coach had their own group for about 35 minutes each. I ran my own station putting each group through the same workouts making sure that they were getting enough repetitions of serving and team play. At the end of the three different groups of stations we put them through a conditioning session, in which they did sprints, push-ups, leg lifts, and planks. After the conditioning we came into the middle and we thanked the girls for coming and broke out. At the end of this week I was at a total of 137 hours.
Week 6, October 29th – November 4th
On Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday of week 6 I volunteered to help with more volleyball clinics at BlackSwamp Volleyball Club. We followed the exact procedure as we did from the week above starting with the warm-up. We had the girls go through high-elbow throws, partner passing, serving warm-ups, and then we had them each serve 20 serves a piece. Once they finished the warm-up we went into three different stations again splitting the girls into three groups by their grades. Each coach had their own group and station for about 35 minutes each where we focused on serving, passing, hitting, and team play. I got to work on the court with Dave and we were in charge of running different passing drills for the whole clinic. We worked on things such as simple passing, defense, and serve receive. After we had worked with each of the three groups we then brought the girls in and they had to do the conditioning for the last 10-15 minutes. The conditioning consisted of the same sessions as before sprints, push-ups, leg lifts, and planks. Once again after the conditioning we brought them into the middle, thanked the girls for coming and sent them home after a break out. At the end of this week I had a total of 143 hours.
Week 7, November 5th- November 11th
On Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday of week 7 I volunteered again to help with the BlackSwamp Volleyball Club clinics again. The same format as the past two week, when the girls got there they got right into their warm-ups. They started with
their high-elbow throws with a partner and went right into partner passing. This week there was a group of very strong high school girls in which we kept on one court the entire time putting them through much more advanced groups. I was in charge of this court with one other coach named Mark and we made sure to challenge these girls, while the other two courts rotated between the four other coaches. We started out with some defensive drills that I do at the college level here at Tiffin
University and then went into another difficult drill which is all about ball control. Following those two drills we went into some serve receive drills and made sure to challenge the girls by playing games to 25 throughout the drills. We did this drill for about 45 minutes or so and then we went into some 6-on-6 free ball play, where we played individual games to 5 and then had the losing side sprint in between. When we were done with this drill we had the girls do some individual serving where they had to get 20 serves over and in until it was time for conditioning. Then we put them through the usual conditioning involving sprints, push-ups, leg lifts, and planks, followed by a break out and released the girls. At the end of week 7 I had done 6 more hours and had a total of 149 hours.
Week 8, November 12th- November 18th
My final week, in which I finished my internship hours, I worked Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday at BlackSwamp. The first 4 days were like the usual clinics above in which we started out with the normal warm-ups and broke out into 3 different groups. We broke the girls up by their grades and put them onto three different courts and had two coaches per court. This time I had the second court and was in charge of the serving and team play again with another coach. Each day and every rotation we had the girls warm up their serve and then we had them serve 20 serves over and in. When they finished their serves we went into a little 6-on-6 free ball where the girls were to rotate in every single time their side hit the ball back over the net. Unlike before we didn’t play games to 5 and we didn’t make them run in between the games. We went through all three rotations every day and went through the usual end of the clinic conditioning with the
sprints, push-ups, leg lifts, and planks, then had the break out and released the girls.
On Sunday, the three hour try-out was an evaluation of the different skills that had been worked on throughout the clinics the past couple of weeks. The try out consisted of a total of 72 girls, these girls were trying to make the three different 16 year old teams. The three different teams were the national, American, and regional team, all three teams were to keep 10 girls each and had to make a decision of which 42 girls to cut. There were 9 different stations going on throughout the three hour period, along with scrimmaging and free ball play for the last 45 minutes. The stations consisted of uniform fitting, setting into a target, passing into a target, push-up tests, the shuttle run, serving to zone 1, serving to zone 5, hitting from the back row, and hitting from the outside position. At every station each girl had 10 turns and the coaches were charting how many out of 10, keeping track of the individual scores. Once we had finished the 9 different stations we moved to hitting lines, where the coaches could assess the athletes and see which hitters connect well with each setter. During this time period I was out on the floor tossing the balls to the setters. The last 45 minutes was when we did the free ball play and the scrimmaging, where the coaches moved the top 25 girls down to the last court so that they could pick out the top 20 girls for their national and American teams. I was then in charge of picking from their left overs and the other 47 girls to complete the regional team with 10 girls. Once this process was over we had talked to the girls and let them know that they would be getting an email stating if they were chosen for a team or not. Then we broke out and sent them home. At the end of week 8 I had finished my hours and was at a total of 160 hours.
Sunday, June 10th, was the end of my first week of my internship. My first camp was the Tiffin University football camp, which was held in the brand new facility, the Heminger Recreation Center.
